The Fiber Design Engineer is responsible for the planning and design of complex metro, regional, and long-haul fiber optic network solutions supporting hyperscale customer opportunities. This role operates in a pre-sales environment, partnering closely with Sales, Customer Success, Construction, Engineering, and Operations teams to develop scalable, cost-effective, and technically sound fiber system designs.
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of outside plant fiber infrastructure, including fiber cable systems, conduit configurations, and route/path design considerations. This person must be able to evaluate network feasibility, develop high-level and detailed designs, and support customer-facing opportunities with technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Design complex metro, regional, and long-haul fiber network solutions for hyperscale customers.
- Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed fiber route designs in support of pre-sales opportunities.
- Evaluate existing and proposed fiber infrastructure, conduit systems, and route options for feasibility, cost, scalability, and constructability.
- Design and validate fiber cable and conduit systems, including 1.25″, 1.5″, 4-way, and 7-way duct systems.
- Assess route pathing requirements and constraints, including public right-of-way, railroad crossings, waterway crossings, and rock and other construction adders.
- Collaborate with Sales and customer-facing teams to provide technical support during solution development and customer discussions.
- Prepare design documentation, route exhibits, budgetary estimates, and technical recommendations for customer proposals.
- Support the creation of cost models and scope assumptions for proposed fiber builds.
- Coordinate with internal engineering, construction, permitting, and operations teams to ensure designs are practical and aligned with deployment standards.
- Identify design risks, permitting concerns, and construction challenges early in the sales cycle.
- Maintain knowledge of industry standards, permitting considerations, and best practices for fiber network design.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, GIS, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 5+ years of experience in fiber network design, outside plant engineering, or telecommunications infrastructure planning.
- Experience designing metro, regional, and/or long-haul fiber systems.
- Strong understanding of fiber cable placement methods and conduit systems, including 1.25″, 1.5″, 4-way, and 7-way duct configurations.
- Knowledge of outside plant route planning and pathing requirements, including right-of-way, railroad, waterway, and rock construction considerations.
- Experience supporting projects in a pre-sales, sales engineering, or solution engineering environment.
- Ability to interpret maps, route data, construction drawings, and GIS-based information.
- Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple opportunities and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting hyperscale, data center, cloud, or large enterprise customers.
- Familiarity with fiber construction methods, permitting processes, and cost estimating.
- Knowledge of GIS, CAD, or other network design tools.
- Experience with route optimization, feasibility analysis, and budgetary design development.
- Understanding of long-haul and intercity network architecture.
